Located at the border of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, the Kaimur region is one of the most ecologically diverse and visually stunning areas in the state. For tourists and nature lovers looking to escape the city, the combination of the Kaimur Wildlife Sanctuary and the majestic Telhar Kund waterfall offers an unforgettable experience of pristine wilderness and ancient history.

KAIMUR WILDLIFE SANCTUARY: BIHAR'S LARGEST RESERVE
Established in 1979, the Kaimur Wildlife Sanctuary stands as the largest protected wildlife area in Bihar. Spanning an impressive 1,504.96 square kilometers across the Kaimur and Rohtas districts, the sanctuary is characterized by a beautiful plateaued landscape featuring tropical dry deciduous forests, swampy marshes, and deep valleys.

The sanctuary is a haven for wildlife. It is home to apex predators like Bengal tigers and Indian leopards, alongside sloth bears, Indian pangolins, wild boars, and the rare four-horned antelope. For birdwatchers, the sanctuary boasts over 70 species of resident birds. During the winter months, the area sees a massive influx of migratory birds traveling all the way from Central Asia, including the white-tailed eagle and the lesser white-fronted goose.

Beyond its rich biodiversity, Kaimur holds incredible historical secrets. Hidden deep within the forests are ancient rock paintings (most notably the Lakhania art) that date back roughly 4,000 years, depicting prehistoric life, hunting scenes, and local customs. The sanctuary also encompasses the ruins of the formidable Rohtasgarh and Shergarh forts, alongside megaliths and antique fossils.

TELHAR KUND: THE HIDDEN WATERFALL
Tucked away in the dense forests of the Rohtas plateau is Telhar Kund (also known as Telhar Waterfall). Formed by the natural flow of mountain streams, this breathtaking waterfall cascades down the rocky terrain from a staggering height of approximately 80 meters, creating a deep, crystal-clear natural pool at the bottom.

The beauty of Telhar Kund is mesmerizing, especially during the monsoon season when the water flow is powerful and vibrant. Surrounded by the green Kaimur hills, the site is known for its peaceful environment filled with the chirping of wild birds. Local lore suggests that a massive, unexplored cave exists directly behind the cascading water. Visitors can enjoy panoramic views of multiple smaller waterfalls from the dedicated viewpoint, making it a prime spot for photography and nature walks.
